About Jendouba

Jendouba, also spelled JundÅ«bah, town in the north west of Tunisia, about 95 miles (150 km) west of Tunis. It lies along the middle Wadi Majardah (Medjerda). The town was developed on the railway from Tunis to Algeria during the French protectorate (1881–1955) and still serves as an important crossroads and administrative center on the route from Tunis to the Algerian border. The town is a center for the cultivation and export of grains, especially wheat. About 5 miles (8 km) north are the ruins of the Numidian, and later Roman, town of Bulla Regia.

The surrounding area is the alluvial plain of the middle Majardah valley, a hot, dry region conducive to the cultivation of grains. Pop. (2004) 43,997.

The Jendouba Governorate is one of the twenty-four governorates (provinces) of Tunisia. It covers an area of 3,102 km² and has a population of 401,477 (2014 census).

The following cities and towns are located in the Jendouba Governorate : Aïn Draham, Beni M’ = ’
Tir, Bou Salem, Fernana, Ghardimaou, Jendouba, Oued Melliz and Tabarka.

Archaeological site

It is close to the famous ancient Roman city of Bullaregia or Bulla Regia, as well as the ancient marble quarry of Chemtou :

·  Bulla Regia (8.76 km)

Bulla Regia is an archaeological site in northwestern Tunisia, a former Roman city near modern Jendouba. It is noted for its Hadrianic-era semi-subterranean housing, a protection from the fierce heat and effects of the sun. Many of the mosaic floors have been left in situ; others may be seen at the Bardo Museum, Tunis. There is also a small museum connected with the site. Description In the unique domus architecture developed in the city, a ground-level storey, open to the warming winter sun, stood above a subterranean level, built round a two-story atrium.

· Chemtou Museum (18.49 km)

The Chemtou Museum is a Tunisian archaeological museum, located in Chemtou. This museum of modern design is a collaboration between archaeologists of the Tunisian National Heritage Institute and the German Archaeological Institute offices located in Rome, Italy. It has the distinction of being located in the area of the ancient Roman city of Numidian in a marble quarry. Marble quarries The exploitation of marble began on site in the 2nd century and was operated by the Roman emperors. The location of the area, not far from the Medjerda River, allowed for mass production for export.

Touristical cities

  • Tabarka 

is a coastal town located in north-western Tunisia, close to the border with Algeria. It has been famous for its coral fishing, the Coral Festival of underwater photography and the annual jazz festival. Tabarka’ = ’s history is a colorful mosaic of Phoenician, Roman, Arabic and Turkish civilizations. The town is dominated by an offshore rock on which is built a Genoese castle. Nationalist leader Habib Bourguiba, later to become president of post-independence Tunisia, was exiled here by the French colonial authorities in 1952. It is also considered one of the rainiest towns in Tunisia.

  • Aïn Draham 

is a city in northwestern Tunisia in the Jendouba Governorate situated 25 kilometers south of Tabarka. Historically a military outpost, summer resort and souq, today it is a regional economic hub.

The city is the capital of a delegation of 40,372 inhabitants. The city itself has an estimated population of 10,843 inhabitants (according to the census of 2004). It is located at an altitude of 800 meters on the slopes of the Djebel Bir (1014 m), one of the Kroumirie Mountains. The city is located in one of the most humid areas of Tunisia and holds the record for the highest average rainfall at 1534 mm per year.

Its name describes the sulfurous hot springs in the area used by the Romans in antiquity. Ruins of Roman baths are also found in the area.

Climate

In Jendouba, the climate is warm and temperate. In winter there is much more rainfall than in summer. The Köppen-Geiger climate classification is Csa. The average annual temperature in Jendouba is 18.0 °C (64.4 °F). About 504 mm (19.84 in) of precipitation falls annually.

Major businesses and Investment opportunities

Agriculture in the governorate of Jendouba is mainly based on cereals, breeding, market gardening, and arboriculture. En Indeed, thanks to a large agricultural area estimated at 300,700 ha, of which 170,000 ha of useful land, and a forest potential estimated at 118,500 ha ...


The Jendouba governorates participates largely in the national production of strategic food with 136.5 thousand  tons of  cereals, 12.9 thousand  tons of  fruits, 99.1 thousand  tons of  vegetables, 120.3 thousand  tons of  milk et 12.3 thousand  tons of  red meat. The governorate also produces 70 000 m3 of wood and 70 000 quintals of cork.


Fishing resources in the region of Tabarka are estimated at about 20 thousand tons per year and are still not used to their maximum in spite of an appropriate basic infrastructure.


The industrial activity of the region is based on the agri food sector which accounts for 45.7 % of the projects, 69.3 % of investments and 41.8% of direct industrial employment. It is also characterized by the presence of a large company well known on the national scale, namely la Laiterie du Nord-Ouest. The region hosts 282 industrial units, 14 of which are totally exporting units.


The Tabarka area is experiencing a substantial growth of its tourism, thanks to its beautiful seaside and forest endowment and to the existence of an increasingly diversified and modern tourism infrastructure: the Tabarka International Airport, the golf course, the marina, the comfortable luxury hotels and the HammamBourguiba spa. Located 20km away from Tabarka, this spa specializes in the treatment of the respiratory system ailments. It is developing fast in order to meet a potential demand estimated at 1.390,000 hotel nights.


The handicrafts sector creates and produces goods reflecting the region’s characteristic: coral working, cork processing, creation of wood artifacts and pottery.


Several investment opportunities are to be found in the region in the fields of agriculture, fishing, agri-food business, useful substances tourism and communication technologies:


Agriculture and fishing (fruit tree growing, introducing cows in irrigated areas, organic farming, mushroom growing, trawlers,  floriculture...).


Agri food (conditioning agricultural products, transforming forest products, cheese making...).


Useful substances (marble extraction and processing, plaster cutting and sculpting, industrial pottery, manufacturing of bleaching products for paper and paint industries).


Tourism and handicrafts (accommodation facilities, spa resort, leisure boat, making of handicraft items in wood or cork...).

Communication technologies (software development, websites maintenance and development, remote services...).
